About the code and standards

ASME is known to be one of the international developers of codes and standards of scientific, artistic and technical practice. Since the first edition of the Legendary Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes in 1914, ASME codes and standards have been expanded to include approximately 600 products being printed. These products cover a wide range of topics such as printing technology, nuclear power plants, escalators, elevators construction, design, standardization and performance testing.

The development and revision of the ASME code and standards are open throughout the year. More than 4,700 volunteers, including engineers, scientists and government officials, provide technical expertise to protect public safety and reflect industry best practices. The results of their efforts are used in more than 100 countries. We have set standards for code development around the world.

The ASME will develop voluntary standards to improve public safety, health and quality of life, and promote innovation, trade and competitiveness.

ASME develops and revises standards based on market demand and, through an agreement process, opens meetings for all citizens to manage standards-related actions. The ASME agreement committee is made up of volunteer experts from a variety of interests, includinggovernments, users, manufacturers, and general interests. The ASME standard and subsequent amendments are based on the review of reliable technical data by the consensus committee and its subcommittees.

The ASME process includes complete public comments on all standard operations. Interested persons may review and comment on ASME standards or revisions submitted, and file complaints based on previously submitted issues. Competent authorities may use voluntary ASME standards to comply with prudential regulatory requirements. ASME standards are used in more than 100 countries around the world.
